Variety Is A Very Good Thing

monogamy

To most people monogamy is the ideal, not a perversion. In an ideal world, it is the way we’d like things to be, but in nature not that many species mate for life. It seems it’s the way society wants us to behave, families and monogamy are the very cornerstones of our civilization. Maybe when people lived to be 30 maximum and got married at 13 it wasn’t a bad arrangement, but with lives being so extended, it just doesn’t seem realistic.

We go through many phases in our lives, and I cannot imagine finding a person in my teens that I’d still be happy with in my 40’s. I cannot even fathom what I saw in some of the people I wanted more than life itself at the time years ago. We grow and change as people very much and not that many are going to find a life partner they will feel the same way about 20 years from now as they do today. How do you know what you will want 20 years from now? I think marriages would do better like an automobile license. Renew every 3 years or something, if at the time of next renewal, do you want to continue on as you are? Fine, do so, otherwise, realize it had its time, it’s run its course, it’s over now.

I don’t think what you have with others on the side while in a relationship diminishes what you have with the primary partner. Many would argue otherwise, but I don’t personally see it as such. I can have fun on the side and it has nothing to do with my primary partner, it’s my own private thing that has nothing to do with anyone but me and the other party involved. I think variety is important and makes us appreciate what we do have, even steak for dinner every night gets boring, we appreciate it more if it’s not on the menu as often in my opinion. It’s unbelievable to me that countries literally have laws where you will be put to death if you commit and are caught doing adultery, it’s beyond insane to me.
